What is intent-based prospecting for financial advisors

Last updated April 13, 2026 · By Isaiah Grant, Founder

Intent-based prospecting means finding people based on what they are doing right now — not just who they are on paper. Instead of filtering by age and income and hoping someone picks up the phone, you watch for signals that someone actually needs advice.

How it works

Traditional prospecting starts with demographics: age 55+, income over $200K, lives in a certain zip code. You get a list. You cold-call or mail it. Most of the people on that list are not looking for an advisor right now.

Intent-based prospecting flips the order. It starts with signals — events that suggest someone is in motion financially:

The idea is that someone who just paid off their mortgage is more likely to engage with an advisor than someone who merely fits a demographic profile.

Where the term comes from

Intent-based marketing has existed in B2B software for years — companies like Bombora and 6sense built entire businesses on tracking buyer intent signals. The concept is now reaching wealth management. Tools like FINNY explicitly use "intent signals" and "money-in-motion" detection. Aidentified tracks wealth trigger events. Even Catchlight's propensity scoring is a softer version of intent detection.

Why it matters for advisors

The conversion math changes. A list of 1,000 demographically qualified names might yield 5-10 conversations. A list of 50 people who just experienced a wealth-triggering event might yield the same number of conversations — with far less effort and far less waste.

It also changes how you sound. When you reach out to someone who just sold a business, you can say something specific and helpful. When you reach out to someone who merely fits a demographic bucket, you sound like every other advisor mailing that zip code.

The limits

Intent signals are only as good as the data sources behind them. Public records lag. Not every life event shows up in a database. And a signal only tells you someone might need advice — it does not tell you they want to hear from you specifically.

That is where the rest of your system matters: your content, your reputation, your follow-up cadence. A prospect who sees your name, reads a helpful answer on your site, and then gets a timely, relevant outreach is far more likely to respond than one who gets a cold email from a stranger — even if the timing is right.

TL;DR

Intent-based prospecting finds people based on life events — mortgage payoffs, job changes, business sales — rather than just demographics. The conversion rate is higher because you are reaching people who actually need advice right now, not just people who fit a profile.

Frequently asked

Is AI prospecting just buying a list with extra steps?

No. A purchased list is a static snapshot of contacts somebody else also bought. AI prospecting watches public signals — life events, employer changes, mortgage payoffs, business filings — and surfaces real people whose situation just changed. Different inputs, different outputs, very different reply rates.

How is this different from Catchlight or Finny?

Catchlight and Finny are SaaS layers that score the leads you already have. The Lead Scorer workflow we install does that AND surfaces net-new prospects from public records, then drafts the outreach in your voice. Tools-vs-installed-system is the real difference.

What's a realistic reply rate?

On a properly scored list with personalized outreach, a one-percent reply rate is the floor and three to five percent is achievable on niche audiences. The lever is matching message specificity to signal quality — generic outreach to a generic list is still generic outreach.

Do we need a separate tool for this or does it run inside the stack?

It runs inside the stack you already have. Outputs land in your CRM, drafts land in your inbox. We don't sell or resell a prospecting SaaS — we install the pattern using your existing tools.
